Labor Day Tree Planting

Sep 4, 2015 | Events, Farming

The telluric light emerges over the silhouetted trees, awakening life for yet another day. The dew on the barnyard weed seeps into the soil, quenching the thirst of the land. White clovers and dandelions surface through the lingering nights midst, evaporating into the heat of the summer’s day. Laughter made it’s way onto the fields, joining in as a melody to the woodpecker drumming on the maple tree and the whitetail deer tap dancing along.

Labor Day was full of lively labor here on Olde Orchard Hill Farm. Members of the farm brought out their working boots, the shovels, and much perseverance to plant the new additions to our farm. An organic grove of forty peach and fifty quince trees begin to take root in their new home. Our goal for these younglings was to let them go through their first winter in hopes that they survive and thrive come spring.

We began the tree plantings every day at the break of dawn during Labor Day weekend. Ambition was the motivation to continue cultivating and expanding the farm. Sure, it was hard work digging ninety holes, lifting heavy filled wheelbarrows back and forth, and getting the last stretch of a heat wave September had to offer, but like it was once said, “You cannot plough a field by turning it over in your mind.” The hard work for one weekend was well worth the memories created and the forthcoming of Olde Orchard Hill Farm. Come join us to be a part of future farm work or to take a stroll in the serene beauty of daybreak on our farm.
